Yorktown Bridge Construction Extended

October 1, 2025—The replacement of a 106-year-old bridge on Old Crompond Road will continue until December with the goal of reopening the crossing.

The Town of Yorktown received permission to continue the replacement work from state Department of Environmental Conservation. Environmental regulations protecting stream trout and wildlife in the area limited the replacement work over the past two years to four months annually.

“We’ve been struggling to get this bridge done. There are a lot of moving parts that have to happen, but we ran out of time according to the DEC,” said Supervisor Lachterman. “With the help of Assemblyman Matt Slater, we’ve been negotiating with the DEC, and we have been given more time to complete the bridge.”

A severe storm in 2023 damaged the bridge, requiring its replacement.

“The anticipated completion date would be the first week in December,” said highway Superintendent Dave Paganelli. “That’s very crucial because the detour on White Hill Road is not safe during the winter.”

In the coming months, a crane will install the replacement bridge, which is a prefabricated, modular structure.

“I’m very happy to facilitate the extension with the DEC,” said Assemblyman Slater. “I do want to thank the DEC regional office for being so receptive and willing to work with the town to grant them this important extension.”

After Town officials discovered the storm damage on the two-lane bridge, they restricted traffic to one lane. They subsequently closed the bridge when replacement work began last year.

“The supervisor and I have been dealing with a lot of the concerns of the residents, and we are listening to all your concerns, and we do care. That’s why we try to take as much action as we can,” said deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito.
