Yorktown opens new playground at Blackberry Woods
September 12, 2025—Yorktown inaugurated a new playground on Wednesday at Blackberry Woods.
The new children’s playground has a colorful jungle gym and a swing set made by Miracle Recreation. The playground gear is set atop a soft surface to minimize fall injuries to small children.
“I’ve been very committed over my term to making sure that we have great facilities,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “We’ve been working on a lot of different projects, our pools, our parks. We know that we’re leaving our town for our kids.”
Earlier this year, the Yorktown Recreation Commission approved the playground renovation at a cost of $47,593.20. Liberty Parks and Playgrounds installed the new gear.
“This project is all about getting ready for this next generation of youngsters,” said parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr. “The parents and children of this community came to our Recreation Commission meeting, where they pushed for this project. Without their support, I don’t think we would have been able to get to the finish line and be here today.
The Blackberry Woods playground is the latest public park improvement in Yorktown. Last month, the town opened a rehabilitated pickleball facility with six courts with new, high-quality court surfaces, fresh painting, durable 8-foot-high fencing, and overhead lighting that allows for night games.
“It’s another great project, another great playground, and another great neighborhood of people with a lot of little ones who are going to be using it,” said Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito.
