Formal designation is the "gold standard" of historic preservation as it ensures that an historic property or site can never be destroyed except in cases of financial hardship. At the present time, Yorktown has 15 designated structures although many more are eligible for this distinction. Landmarking does not restrict an owner's right to make appropriate alterations and the Commission will assist owners to ensure that their plans preserve the historic character and value of their home. Commission reviews applications for historic landmarks and grants Certificates of Appropriateness to permit such alterations. Designated structures receive a large and attractive marker for their property.

Homes of Historic Distinction
A recent survey conducted by the historic architectural firm, Larsen Fisher, identified over 200 houses of notable interest in Yorktown. In this new initiative, the Heritage Preservation Commission hopes to mark many of these structures with exterior plaques similar to those found in other historic towns that will allow the residents and visitors to appreciate our past. Interested owners are urged to contact the Commission by email or letter and share whatever information they may have regarding their property. At the same time, the Commission will reach out to owners of eligible properties and conduct research when needed.
