New Floorball Program Breathes Fresh Life into Shrub Oak Memorial Rink
The Town of Yorktown is sliding into summer with a new youth sports initiative.
The town has officially launched its inaugural floorball program at the Shrub Oak Memorial Rink, offering local children a high-energy introduction to the world of hockey. So far this summer, 13 children between the ages of 4 and 8 have laced up their sneakers to join the program.
Floorball is an accessible version of floor hockey. It is played on dry rinks using specialized, lightweight plastic sticks and a hollow, perforated plastic ball (like a whiffle ball). Because it doesn't require heavy pads, skates, or ice, it offers an inexpensive, low-barrier entry point for children to learn basic stickhandling and game mechanics.
"We are looking to grow the sport of hockey and give the roller rink at Shrub Oak Park a new life with our young athletes," said Yorktown Parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr.
The local program is managed by Mountain Top Hockey. Led by Coach John Kurian, the weekly sessions are designed to introduce young participants to the fundamentals of hockey.
The opening sessions gave local children an ideal opportunity to stay active, master new physical skills, and experience the thrill of hockey within a welcoming, community-first environment. Kurian noted that the rink was filled with smiles, constant movement, and palpable enthusiasm, making it a memorable experience for Yorktown's youngest athletes.
Parents interested in registering their children can contact the Yorktown Parks and Recreation Department for scheduling and enrollment details.
