New Sand Volleyball Courts, Accessibility Upgrades Coming to Tom Diana Park at Granite Knolls Recreation & Sports Complex

A series of upgrades at Tom Diana Park at Granite Knolls Recreation & Sports Complex will offer the public two new sand volleyball courts, paved parking, and improved trail access.

The new sand volleyball courts are being built adjacent to the existing basketball area, creating a multi-sport hub at the park. They are expected to open in the fall.

“We’re looking to get the high school involved in playing some beach volleyball up here, getting them prepared for their volleyball seasons, as well as maybe starting some adult leagues and youth programs for sand volleyball,” said parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr.

In addition to the volleyball courts, the town is advancing plans to upgrade the park’s gravel parking lot to a paved, more accessible surface, including a pervious surface with an impervious driving lane.

“Paving this parking lot is going to be great for accessibility for the public, which is very important, especially when you have an accessible playground and a sensory garden,” said Martorano.

The project may also include a new trailhead on Stony Street for the Granite Knolls hiking trail, part of a larger hiking hub that connects Granite Knolls and Legacy fields with other town trails.

“My thanks to Jim and his whole department,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “The quality of life here is wonderful, and a lot of it is our parks and our recreation.”
