Medical Needs
If you or a loved one depends on electrically powered medical devices:
- Contact your utility provider to inform them of your medical needs. This may qualify you for priority restoration. Con Edison:1-800-752-6633, NYSEG:1-800-572-1131
- Have a backup power source (such as a charged battery pack or generator) ready if possible.
- Prepare an emergency plan with family, friends, or neighbors who can assist you if power is lost.
- Call 911 immediately if your medical equipment stops working and you are in distress.
Keep Fire Hydrants Clear
Clear any snow and ice approximately 3 feet around a hydrant and clear a path from the hydrant to the street.
Do Not Plow Snow Into the Road
It is illegal for anyone to plow or shovel into or across a roadway.
No On Street Parking
There is no on street parking during a snow emergency, so that crews can clear snow properly. Cars will be ticketed and towed if necessary.
Check Vents and Exhausts
Make sure snow is cleared from dryer vents and exhaust vents from your home so that the heat exhausts from your home and does not back up into your appliances.
Generators
Check, test, and prepare your generator before the storm, so you are ready. Never use a generator inside. This also goes for grills, camp stoves or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning devices. Keep this equipment outside and away from doors, windows and vents. Carbon monoxide kills. If you start to feel sick, dizzy or weak, get to fresh air right away. Keep the generator dry and plug appliances directly into the generator. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet.
Warming Centers/Shelter
Warming Centers usually cannot open until after the storm so that people are able to drive to the center. Yorktown's Community Emergency Response Team will be activated if needed. Look at the Town's website for announcements.
