Yorktown Commemorates National Medal of Honor Day

Today, the Town of Yorktown joins the rest of the nation in observing National Medal of Honor Day.

The day is dedicated to the few who have displayed conspicuous gallantry at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.

Since the first medals were presented in 1863, the Medal of Honor has stood as the United States’ highest military decoration. It is a symbol of bravery and a testament to the profound character of those who, in the face of unimaginable danger, choose the lives of their comrades and the safety of our nation over their own.

“The Medal of Honor represents the absolute pinnacle of American courage,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman, who issued a proclamation today in recognition of National Medal of Honor Day. “It is vital that we pause today to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by our U.S. service members to preserve our freedom and our way of life. We owe a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid, but by honoring their stories, we ensure that their legacy of selflessness continues to inspire the Yorktown community and generations to come.”

The Town of Yorktown encourages all residents to take a moment of silence today to honor those who have worn the Medal of Honor and all who serve in our Armed Forces.
