Yorktown Inaugurates New Sand Volleyball Courts

Town officials gathered on Monday to cut a ribbon at the Tom Diana Park at Granite Knolls Recreation and Sports Complex, celebrating the completion of two new sand volleyball courts.

Situated adjacent to the existing basketball area, the new courts establish a dynamic multi-sport hub within the park.

“Our Parks & Recreation Department places immense importance on offering a diversity of sports options for residents of all abilities,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “Whether it’s traditional team sports, hiking, or sand volleyball, we are committed to providing accessible recreation that brings our community together.”

Yorktown High School’s volleyball teams will use the courts, and recreation officials are planning to introduce adult volleyball leagues and youth instructional programs.

The volleyball project caps off a busy season of enhancements across Yorktown’s recreational facilities.

In August, the town completed a major repaving and restriping project, upgrading 184 parking spaces at the complex. The smart design incorporates both porous and impervious surfaces; pervious parking areas allow stormwater to drain naturally through the ground, while the impervious driveway ring ensures long-term structural durability.

Earlier in the summer, park upgrades also featured the opening of a new trailhead on Stony Street for the Granite Knolls hiking trail. The trailhead forms part of a larger interconnected network linking Granite Knolls and Legacy Fields to broader town trails, enhancing access for local outdoor enthusiasts.

In June, the town successfully launched its inaugural floorball program at the Shrub Oak Memorial Rink, giving local children a high-energy introduction to the world of hockey.

With the new sand volleyball courts ready for spring, Yorktown continues to broaden its community sports offerings.
