Yorktown Opens New Granite Knolls Parking Lot

Town officials cut the ribbon Thursday on a newly paved and lined parking lot with 184 spaces at the Tom Diana Park at Granite Knolls Recreation and Sports Complex.

Supervisor Ed Lachterman said the project was completed on schedule.

“We had a 16-day project scheduled, and last night, 16 days later, we opened up Granite Knolls parking lot,” said Supervisor Lachterman. “Come enjoy the facilities up here and look for some more improvements for our open space and parks.”

The project was a collaboration among the Town Board, the Recreation Commission, and the Parks and Recreation Department, with Cirone Construction serving as the main contractor. Pat Paving handled the paving work.

“Parking has always been very difficult because of the high usage of this facility. And now, with the parking lot paved, we’ve got more spots, and they designed it to avoid potential flooding,” said Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito.

Officials noted that the design incorporates both porous and impervious surfaces: pervious parking areas allow water to drain through, while the impervious driveway ring provides durability and structure.

“This would not be possible without the support of the Town Board, so thank you, as well as the Recreation Commission,” said parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr. “Without this team effort of all these different parties coming together and working efficiently, this wouldn't have gotten done, and certainly not in 16 days.”

Looking ahead, the town is now planning additional upgrades at the park, including two new beach volleyball courts targeted for completion by October. A separate project, funded in part by a $100,000 Crest grant, will bring a new playground to Sparkle Lake by year’s end.
